The Mississippi State Department of Health is reporting a record one-day rise in new COVID-19 cases with 611.
Todays report far exceeds the previous one-day high of 498, which occurred back on June 8th. The states total number of cases now sits at 22,898. 989 Mississippians have passed away due to the virus with the confirmation 11 additional deaths.
There are currently 82 active outbreaks in Mississippi long-term care facilities.
As of Monday, the MSDH reported that 17,242 Mississippians have recovered from COVID-19.
Last week, State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs reiterated that the little things, such as wearing a mask, social distancing and limiting gatherings, can make a major difference in the potential spread of COVID-19.
If we could just do those things, a lot of the predictions are that coronavirus would just wither away, but we just dont have the patience, unfortunately, to do the easiest things. Its absolutely maddening,” he said.
Dr. Dobbs also explained that the early portion of the summer has been worse than anticipated due to disappointing levels of adherence to guidelines and how that presents problems for a potential resurgence of the virus in the fall.
There is no amount of preparation that can prepare for a tidal wave of cases. Its like mopping up the floor, but you wont turn the sink off. Weve got to turn the sink off if we want to clean the floor,” Dr. Dobbs said.
The states top medical officer also noted that many of the new cases are in younger Mississippians, which is reflected in the chart below.
In recent weeks, hospitalizations have risen and the most recent data shows that 485 Mississippians are currently hospitalized.
