A man is in custody after shooting a dog in Natchez, running from deputies, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
On Wednesday, Adams County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call regarding the shooting of a dog. The owner of the dog identified the man who pulled the trigger as 23-year-old Mantreal West. Unfortunately, the dog did not survive.
When deputies contacted West, he admitted to shooting the dog and gave authorities the gun he used. Investigators determined the gun was reported stolen from Louisiana.
A subsequent criminal history search revealed that West was a convicted felon which led to a search warrant being issued at his residence and an affidavit being issued for his arrest. West is charged with Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon and Possession of a Stolen Firearm.
When deputies served the arrest warrants, West fled the scene leading them on a manhunt, but he was soon apprehended in a drainage area in a neighbor’s back yard. Five more firearms were found hidden in a wooded area behind West’s residence, but it has not been determined if the weapons were also stolen.
West is being held at the Adams County Sheriff’s Office with no bond pending arraignment. Officials say the owner of the dog plans to file animal cruelty charges.
