The NCAA announced Wednesday that all 2020 championships have been canceled due to concerns regarding COVID-19.
The decision comes after multiple conferences, on both levels of competition, had already decided to delay fall sports until the spring.
Both DII and DIII president councils released the following statements on the move:
“Division II’s seven fall 2020 championships are canceled, the Division II Presidents Council decided on Wednesday due to the operational, logistical and financial challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.” – DII Presidents Council
“NCAA Division III championships in fall sports for 2020-21 are canceled. With the health and safety of the division’s student-athletes, coaches, athletics administrators and communities as its priority, the Division III Presidents Council made the decision Wednesday to cancel the championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related administrative and financial challenges.” – DIII Presidents Council
Delta State and Mississippi College will be affected by the move as the Gulf South Conference is still planning to play sports this fall, while the respective conferences of Millsaps College and Belhaven University have already pushed back fall sports.
