On Wednesday afternoon, the head football coach of the Southeast Lauderdale Tigers, Calvin Hampton, died in a car crash.
Driving down Highway 19 in Meridian around 1 p.m., Hampton’s vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler near the intersection of Long Creek Road.
The high school posted its condolences on Facebook and also announced that the day’s remaining classes and school functions are canceled.
“It is with great sadness that we pass along the news of the loss of Coach Calvin Hampton. Coach Hampton was loved by many in our community, county, and city. Please remember his family and everyone who cared about and loved Coach Hampton in the days ahead. All school functions for the rest of the day are canceled. Grief counselors will be available when classes resume tomorrow.”
The Meridian Public School District issued a statement, as well, regarding the tragic death of Hampton, a former player and coach at Meridian High School.
