A Central Mississippi Correctional Facility inmate has died at a Jackson hospital.

According to the Mississippi Department of Corrections, 40-year-old Mary Jewell had been hospitalized intermittently since December after “becoming ill several months ago.” While hospitalized, Jewell was recently tested for COVID-19, and the results were negative.

Jewell was serving a 15-year sentence on an attempted armed robbery charge and two counts of possession of a weapon by a felon in Lee County.

Earlier today, Governor Tate Reeves stated that three inmates at three separate facilities have been tested for COVID-19. Two tests came back negative while the results of the third are still pending. Two MDOC employees have tested positive.

The MDOC has suspended inmate transfers and visitation in an effort to keep the highly contagious virus out of the state’s prison system.
