After a deadly week in Mississippi prisons, the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) has lifted the lockdown for all state prisons, exempting Parchman.
The Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman remains on lockdown as three deaths took place at the Sunflower County prison last week.
Visitations and other privileges will resume at the other two state prisons.
Lawmakers, such as Congressman Bennie Thompson, have called for a federal investigation into MDOC.
Earlier this week, Thompson announced, via twitter, he “will be requesting that the U.S. Attorney General launch an investigation into the ongoing failures in safety, security, health, and environmental standards within the Mississippi Department of Corrections.”
In total, five inmates were killed in Mississippi prisons last week.
Governor Phil Bryant attributed the deaths to “gang violence.”
